Isabella studied Diego. Her emotions were all over the place. The fear, while still present, was beginning to leave her body. She inhaled deeply for three seconds, held it and exhaled for three seconds; soon she started to feel her normal self again.

“Diego, thank you so much for saving me.”

“I almost didn’t, Isabella.” His voice shook. His eyes looked in her direction, but weren't focused clearly yet.

“But you did.”

Josh took the pulse of the man laying at the bottom of the steps. Then he pulled his phone up and tapped a few times.

“I need the police and an ambulance to come to 13345 Waverly Beach Road. One man is shot and one man is unconscious.”

Once she knew Diego was okay, she wandered over to the man who’d been shot. As she knelt beside him Josh barked, “Isi no, don’t.”

“I have to Josh, I’m a doctor.”

Josh rushed over and knelt beside her. “I’ll be here in case he comes to and tries anything.”

Examining for bullet wounds, she found one had hit him in the leg and one in the side. His breathing was labored, and bubbles were forming at the site of the bullet hole.

“His lung is leaking into his chest. I need to watch him closely to make sure his lung doesn’t collapse. Please help me turn him to the left lateral recumbent position then we’ll need to get a tourniquet on his leg.”

“I know that means to turn him onto his left side, but if I’m to help you, you’ll need to tell me in layman’s terms.”

She nodded as she held her hand over the wound as much as she could and put her ear to his chest.

“I can hear gurgling and his breathing becoming shallow.”

Sitting back, she examined his chest and saw one side bulging.

Placing her hands over the wound, she spread it open and allowed air to escape from inside the chest wall. Sirens in the distance told her an ambulance was on its way.

The hissing sound decreased as did the bulge in his chest. She kept her hand on his chest and glanced over at the unconscious man, Dominic Juarez, being watched by Travis across the room. Travis kneeled beside him and felt for a pulse, and nodded to her when he caught her watching.

Josh asked her. “You know him?”

“Yes. He’s a friend of Mateo’s. Why would he be trying to kidnap me?”

“How close are they?”

She shook her head. “Sadly, not that close if he has something to do with Mateo’s disappearance.”

The sirens sounded in the driveway and Shep walked downstairs to open the door for the ambulance and police. Her hands still shook slightly after everything that had gone on, and now having to go through it all again with the police was an unpleasant thought, but necessary. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

As the paramedics rushed upstairs, she began relaying what was happening to her patient.

“He has a hole in his right lung. It was leaking air into the chest wall so I spread it open to allow the air to release.
